τὸν δ' ἀγανοῖς ἐπέεσσιν ἐρητύσασκε παραστάς:
δαιμόνι', οὔ σε ἔοικε κακὸν ὣς δειδίσσεσθαι:
ἀλλ' αὐτός τε κάθησο. καὶ ἄλλους ἵ̈δρυε λαούς:
οὐ γάρ πω σάφα οἶσθ' οἷος νόος ἀτρείδαο:
νῦν μὲν πειρᾶται: τάχα δ' ΐψεται υἷας Ἀχαιῶν
ἐν βουλῇ δ' οὐ πάντες ἀκούσαμεν οἷον ἔειπε:
μή τι χολωσάμενος ῥέξῃ κακὸν υἷας Ἀχαιῶν:
θυμὸς δὲ μέγας ἐστὶ διοτρεφέος βασιλῆος:
τιμὴ δ' ἐκ Διός ἐστι: φιλεῖ δέ ἑ μητίετα Ζεύς:
Whomsoever he met that was a chieftain or man of note, to his side would he come and with gentle words seek to restrain him, saying: "Good Sir, it beseems not to seek to affright thee as if thou were a coward, but do thou thyself sit thee down, and make the rest of thy people to sit.
